I hope that this helps to explain things. I would have written out instructions but I just couldn't figure out a good way of wording it.

It's probably a good thing that you were tired and made a few mistakes, as I am such a noob, that seeing how you easily fixed the mistakes taught me lots too, and will help me as I knit.
I'm not sure how you would write out this pattern--video was definitely the way to go with this. Very impressive!

John Allen has some similar stitches in his stich book with short row techniques, but I have never seen this one.
I will be very interested to see what you can make with this. It may keep me up nights for a while.

Thank so much for these FABULOUS tutorial videos! The fan lace is just gorgeous and you are a natural when it comes to teaching. You make it look so easy, even to me, who really IS a novice (I had to laugh when you called yourself one; how could a "novice" figure out such a pattern?). I did want to let you know that in playing with the pattern, I discovered that on my gauge machine (vintage KnitKing Automatic), a 4x8 Lego block pulls exactly 3 or 6 needles in and out of work. Perfect for this pattern! Maybe it would work on your machine too? What a time saver for setting up the 3-6-3 pattern.

A lovely piece of lace which I will have to try. I seen a shrug knitted from this lace at my Machine Knitters Guild but did not know how it was produced.

I am new to machine knitting. In fact, I just ordered my first machine, Brother KX-390. It seemed that your machine ran really smoothly in your video and I am curious which machine you have. I have a feeling I will want to get a metal bed machine at some point and I am already researching them.
